Kyusai Yoshida has created this magnificent piece of art. Inspired by the traditional Kabuki play "Momiji Gari".
Momijigari is a Japanese word. Momigi can be interpreted to mean maple trees or maple leaves or baby hands. Gari usually means gathering, such as mushroom gathering. As such, a literal interpretation of the word momijigari is the gathering of maples. However, the true meaning of the word to the Japanese people is much deeper than this.
Every fall the Japanese people travel to the mountains to view the changing color of the maple trees. These traditional trips are what the word momijigari refers to. However, unlike similar trips American’s take in the fall, the Japanese trips are very spiritual. The Japanese revere nature and the changing leaves evoke a nostalgic feeling among the Japanese people. The intense color of the Japanese maples has been the inspiration for art and poetry in Japan for over a thousand years
